Matt Jones

Overview: A face-up post player with a nose for rebounding. Possesses an excellent combination of strength and athleticism. In his sophomore year pulled down rebounds in flurries. His best season statistically was his first year. Jones showed flashes at times of what he could be. On occasion was capable of putting up impressive numbers. Recorded a 21-rebound game, and over 15 points on multiple occasions.

Offense: Is a face-up post player. Possessed a nice touch from the mid-range and a somewhat reliable turn-around fadeaway. Doesn’t have the moves or touch to be a consistent finisher around the rim, but he gets enough elevation to knock in a hook every now and again. Jones put in quite a few points on offensive rebounds. Free throw shooting was consistent at one time, but declined as career progressed. A quality pick-and-roll player, most of his points came from pick-and-roll situations. Tends to “pop,” rather than roll. Open jumper is consistent.

Defense: Can be an above-average defender when he feels like it. Developed a reputation for “moseying” on defense. Was at one time an excellent rebounder, routinely pulling down double-digit boards. Rebounding numbers declined junior year. Good enough foot speed to hedge pick-and-rolls effectively, and is capable of guarding small players when forced to switch.

Athleticism: Jones’ height, vertical, and strength are his greatest physical tools. His first year, Jones was strong and in-shape, due to being on the football team. He was physically imposing, and was able to push opposing players around.
